IHP and the UK's response to the JAVA Earthquake - July 2006
Following the reports of an earthquake measuring 6.2 earthquake early on the morning of Saturday 27th May, IHP was in touch with the WHO and a number of leading UK-linked medical NGOs on the ground (Merlin, Islamic Relief, Red Cross/Crescent). IHP alerted industry on its website within 36 hours to stand ready to help support any call for international assistance depending on the outcomes of assessments being undertaken.
The WHO's early reports that there was no need for a coordinated response proved correct. Having placed the industry on stand-by, within two weeks IHP asked the UK donors to stand down. Given the preparations for a possible volcanic eruption, many much needed humanitarian supplies were already in the area. Merlin had flown in 2 tonnes of medical supplies.
IHP's approach:
- Enabled direct communication across the UK industry, ensuring that information was provided on the actual needs on the ground.
- Ensured that no unwanted donations were sent to further complicate the disaster management logistics on the ground in Java;
- Initiated a donations mechanism to ensure that only top quality, in-date donations would be sourced and sent against specifically defined needs; and
- Provided a mechanism for interested groups to provide their support in a strategically important and effective way
