Appeal for Medicines - East Africa CrisisNovember 2011
More than 12 million people in Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia, and the newly-formed Republic of South Sudan have been left in need of food, water and emergency healthcare because of one of the worst droughts in 60 years. Parts of Somalia are now affected by famine.
IHP has already sent Emergency Health Kits to Kenya to treat 10,000 people, and to treat another 60,000 people across Somalia. Our principal partners on the ground are International Medical Corps and Women and Health International.
The United Nations Office for the Co-ordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) reports that urgent health needs will persist into 2012 as a result of limitations on humanitarian access in some areas, and the prevailing malnutrition and environmental factors in crowded IDP camps.
IHP’s partners are focused on running Primary Health Care Clinics in the IDP camps, and Hospitals for referrals from IDP clinics of more serious medical cases requiring surgical and other emergency interventions.
Accordingly, the attached needs list reflects both the Primary and Secondary Health Care requirements. The volumes are an indication of what is needed to support clinics and hospitals in and around the key IDP camps in Dolo Ado, Ethiopia; Dadaab, Kenya; and Mogadishu, Somalia, for the next 3 months.
In order to meet customs requirements in East Africa, all products must arrive in-country with at least 12 months of shelf life remaining, and should therefore have a minimum of 14 months at the point of delivery to IHP.
The needs list can be accessed here.
Financial donations are welcome to help meet the costs of handling and transportation. Please click the yellow "Donate" button on the right to support this response. Each £1 donated will deliver at least £20 of essential medicnes to the medical teams on the ground.
