Hurricane Melissa Response

As Jamaica begins to recover from the catastrophic impact of Hurricane Melissa, International Health Partners is stepping up to support Project HOPE’s emergency response, ensuring that critical medicines reach those who need them most.

Hurricane Melissa, a Category 5 storm, has left devastation across the Caribbean, displacing over 44,000 people and causing at least 61 deaths. In Jamaica, five major hospitals have been severely impacted, power remains out across 60% of the island, and many communities are still cut off by flooding and landslides. Health workers are stretched to their limits, with medical supplies dwindling and services disrupted.

Project HOPE’s Emergency Response Team is on the ground in Jamaica, addressing urgent health, water, sanitation, and hygiene needs. The team is distributing hygiene kits and medical supplies, coordinating closely with the Ministry of Health, and preparing to launch static and mobile health clinics in the hardest-hit parishes of St. Elizabeth, Westmoreland, St. James, and Trelawny. These clinics will provide essential primary care, clean water, and mental health support to both residents and frontline responders who have endured unimaginable strain.

To bolster these life-saving efforts, IHP has shipped 63 Essential Health Packs (EHPs) containing vital emergency medicines to support Project HOPE’s operations. These EHPs include essential pharmaceuticals to help treat injuries, prevent disease outbreaks, and stabilise up to 50,000 patients at Project HOPE clinics and in facilities struggling to maintain services.

By partnering with Project HOPE, IHP is helping to restore access to health care for thousands of people and strengthen the resilience of local health systems in the wake of this disaster.

Together, we’re ensuring that hope and healing reach the heart of Jamaica when it’s needed most.
